The Hamilton Canal District will result in the reinvention of 15 acres of vacant and underutilized land as a new vibrant mixed-use neighborhood.  The City of Lowell secured Trinity Financial of Boston as the Master Developer for this unique and exciting urban redevelopment opportunity.  The completed project will transform the primary gateway into Downtown Lowell by connecting the transportation hub at the Gallagher Terminal and Lowell Connector with the core downtown, the Arts District, and the major event venues.

The City has awarded a construction contract to DeFelice Corp of Dracut to complete the Phase I Traffic Mitigation and Pedestrian Improvements to the Lord Overpass.  Work will start by the end of April 2010 and last through the summer.  Improvements include new crosswalks, sidewalks, lighting and street trees along the east (South Common) side of Thorndike Street from the Gallagher Terminal entrance drive to Middlesex Street, as well as traffic signalization and lane improvements at the Lord Overpass. The project design can be downloaded from the Public Documents page of this website.

Work has started on the rehabilitation of the Appleton Mills project, part of Phase I of the Hamilton Canal District, which will result in the creation of 130 live/work/sell affordable rental units geared towards artists.  The project is slated for completion in the Spring of 2011.
